Nina spent four years at Westminster Hotel School, London gaining OND and HND in Hospitality Management. Chewton Glen was where her career properly started and where she met her husband, Gerard Basset, OBE and future Hotel du Vin business partner, Robin Hutson. Her time at the hotel was cut short when she was offered the position of AA Hotel Inspector. Becoming an inspector at 21 years old, she was the youngest inspector ever, remaining so to this day. Five years on, Nina left the AA to help with the start up of the first Hotel du Vin, in Winchester, with her husband Gerard, and Robin. Following the sale of the Hotel du Vin group in 2004, she enjoyed some time out, but missed the buzz of the hotel business and so the idea of their new enterprise, Hotel TerraVina was formed.
